Are you sure its safe to shut down every programme in this way???? i'm gonna give it a go later on tonight, so a few quick responses will be very reassuring.
Yes it is. Worst that is likely to happen is that your PC will lock and will need rebooting. But all the processes that you stop should restart just fine.0 -
To save faffing about with Ctrl + Alt + Del loadsa times, try EndItAll2. Brilliant piece of freeware. Closes/kills all non-essential apps/processes in 1 click.
System essential ones (e.g. explorer) are 'protected' by default but it's also user configurable to protect/unprotect any.
For W98/ ME it's safe to unprotect all bar explorer and systray. For XP go with the program defaults.
When defragging it can also help if you disable your screensaver.

TOG
p.s. Fastest and best defragger on the market is O&O. Integrates in to MMC and runs in background in 'Stealth' mode. Once user-defined fragmentation threshold is exceeded it defrags only when CPU is idling. Loads of other features.604!0 -
closed all the progs last night and it worked.
It still took about 10 hours at a guess (I know it had been going 4 hours and was at 37% when I went to bed) but in the morning it was done!
Thanks all.
I may load up one of the downloads at some later date, but I'm trying to keep as much system resources free as poss as I am down to 35% while everythings running!!!!
Thanks allAnything I write is based on my opinion only. Before acting upon any advice from anyone on a forum further professional advice should be sought.0 -

EndItAll only runs when you start it manually and only uses 650k of memory.

You should check if there is an error on your disk. (for xp) Goto Start->Run
Type in CMD to bring up the command prompt and then type :
chkdsk c: /f
It will ask you if you want to check the disk next time the computer reboots. type Y and reboot0 -

This made the whole thing automatic. When you wanted to do a defrag, windows shut down under control of this program and then started the defrag on re-boot. This stops all the problems as no other programs are running at this point causing any interuptions.
