Ref Barclays Bereavement 'Service'.... On reading your entry, I thought it was my story!!! Elderly mum died, all other financial organisations, bar SAGA, strangely, got sorted within a few weeks but I'm still battling to get funds from a Bond my mum had. I'd requested funds (the bond matures in june) ahead of maturity and was assured I could access funds without penalty. In the absence of any further word from them I contacted them on 16th March and was told cheque was on its way. Many communications later and I was told on 5th april I needed to provide instructions from myself and my sister (joint executor) to enable funds to be released - this is over 2 weeks AFTER I was told cheque was on its way, remember. Other funds, had already been released and I'd not been advised the need for further instructions from myself and sister. On 5th April, a supervisor assured me he would be able to CHAPS the money at no charge. Got signatures to bank on 13th /14th (I had to get sister's instruction by post as she lives a long way away). Local Barlcays couldn't / wouldn't / didn't bother to get info to bereavement service until friday 16th, and, of course, it's not been deposited in my / my sister's accounts. I'm livid!!!!! It's now a month since being told cheque was on its way!!
Who was the 'supervisor'??0 -
I am executor for my uncle's estate and I had the same experience with Barclays Bereavement Services. aAll the other financial institutions had sent the money back to me within a week (Yorkshire Building Society transferred the money the day after they received my letter). Barclays took a month and only after I had written a complaint e-mail. I had a phone call and the operator addressed all the points I had made in my e-mail, so maybe that is the answer. I also managed to get a refund on the CHAPS charge. Don't bother trying to chase things up in your local branch either, they know nothing. Good Luck0

Hi,
I am new to this so forgive me if I do anything wrong
My FIL had several accounts with Barclays. A Current,2 savings & 2 Isa's, Sadly he died in June this year.
My hubby is the executor of his estate, Anyway hubby had sorted everything out for the bank, signatures, all documents needed etc...
This was all done on the 30th September. They told him that he would recieve a cheque in the post within 7 to 10 day's.. Nope didn't recieve any cheque only information that they had closed some of his accounts, later still no cheque or any other information FIL's other accounts had been closed. So hubby contacted them again & he was told that because he'd had a goverment pension they where taking it out what was owed to them, But hubby had also recieved a letter from DWP Pensions about him having to pay back what was owed. Hubby told Barclays Bereavement department this.
They told him that everything will get sorted & he will recieve the money in his bank account in 7 to 10 day'swaiting.......... Still no funds, At this point he is getting really frustrated with them. Hubby has his fathers bills to pay !!! Anyway hubby decides to ring them again & they tell him that he should have recieved the money in his account(which he opened with Barclays) by now & that they will e-mail the Bereavemnet department and mark it as priority... This was last Monday Still no Money in his account. He did however recieve some statements yesterday about 2 of his saving accounts being closed, We thought all of this had been dealt with..
Why do they keep saying that they will release the money into his account when they are still sorting out his Dad's accounts??
Hubby is going to contact them again Friday11th if the money is not in his account by 9.30am..
Anyone got any suggestions for me on how I can get them to move a lot quicker. The companies for his dad's bill's keep sending in red letters even though we have explained to them about our situation!!
Thanks for any help

With respect, you may get more repsonses if you post your own new thread and not tack on to a 1.5 yr old one?
Keep at it, and if you get no joy (or even now 6 weeks has passed) contact one of the BS newpapers consumer champion who will help chivvy barclays on. They usually get compensation for lact of interest/your trouble too.0 -

Hi,
I think that you might be interested in the following MSE thread:

There are many posts to read, but I'm pretty sure it will explain the problems that you are experiencing at the moment.
In short, Barclay's Bank have been using a company called ITC Legal Services to deal with their deceased customers' accounts, under the guise of "Barclays Bereavement Service".
I am sorry to tell you that, although ITC Legal Services claim to be the largest probate firm in the UK, sadly they are unregulated as they are not solicitors or any sort of professionals. They are also a complete sham of a company. I urge you to look at the link above and post your problems onto that thread. There you will find many people who are likely to be able to offer help and guidance to you. You're definitely not alone in your situation.

Hi Rachel & Rob...
I am greatly flattered that you have resurrected my thread, which I created when I was looking in the mirror and wondering "is it just me?".
How far have you got with this "probate" business? Are you ready to publish your two month notice?
Don't worry too much about the unpaid bills, these unsecured creditors are blustering because they know you cannot get money out of a corpse. Unfortunately their computerised, "command and control" systems seem to get right out of hand when they come up against a dead debtor - British Gas got as far as getting to the stage of having to reply to my recorded delivery letter saying "Make your mind up. Do I need to meet you with my lawyer so you can pay him or do you want me to bring my tools and assist you with disconnecting the gas supply from what was a rented home - that should be good for a laugh ".
Just send them a copy of your notice and tell them to follow the procedure!!!! - It even works against the tax man

Good luck,
John
They don't like it BUT the executor is appointed by the will from the date of death, he is in charge and is able to tell everyone else what the score is for 6 months (HMRC) and 12 months (everyone else).
OK it can take (say) 6 months for the executor to "prove" the will - but harassment in those 6 months should be treated at least as seriously as harassment of any living debtor.
It is time that these "God almighty" organisations started respecting the law. (and the FSA/banking ombudsman started backing up the need for a clear procedure and staff training for the 2,000 "bereavement" cases, that death creates every working day of the year.).
