What Mattress?

I'm another one just starting out in my quest for a new mattress. We went round the shops just to see what we liked and one shop had a mattress with memory foam on one side and latex on the other.
We sleep in the attic of our house which is tropical in the summer and baltic in the winter. This seemed like a good idea as the memory foam would be a good winter mattress and the latex best in the summer however I can't help feeling it's all a bit of a gimmick. Anyone used one of these combo mattresses? If they are a no no - would latex be the best thing if heat will be an issue?
Thanks for any assistance.

Hi guys,
Im no expert however i have just bought a new bed after researching and try for the past month!
In the end we went for a Sleepeezee Cool Comfort 1400.
Its a 1400 pocket sprint with 47mm of memory foam. It also has some sort of cool material to keep you cool in the summer. Its med/firm.
Now, my understanding is that (or what i was told by a few people in the trade) is that if a king size bed has more than 1500 pocket springs it makes the pockets smaller therfore less efficient/ as in not so sturdy. The other thing i was told was that the mattresses that have the button appearance also help with the structure of the bed, the pins/buttons helps keep all the pockets upright and in position so creates less movement/roll.
Dreams were a rip off compared to the independants btw!0 -

What you were told was partly true. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 springs in a king size mattress. 1500 springs should be very stable as long as the mattress is constructed properly.
The hand tufts do help to support the springs, as does side stitching. However just because you can't see the side stitching, doesn't mean that it isn't there. What you see is cosmentic, and the actual side stitching is hidden behind it.0 -
Hi, I too am looking for a new bed and am VERY confused. Tim, you seem to be really knowledgeable, which bed would you recommend, or which independent manufacturer? It all seems a complete minefield and a really expensive mistake to make if you don't get it right. I know everyone will have individual needs and preferences, but a general all round bed surely can't be that hard to find (although it appears it is!!).0

I'm afraid I'm not allowed to give any recommendations, as it could be seen as advertising.......sorry.0 -

I don't have a link - I've been trying to find anything similar on line but with no joy. That in itself is making me think it's a bit of a gimic as I'm sure if they were any good, they'd be popular. I think we were in Reid which is not where I would buy, but we needed a bit of lie down research.0 -
Sorry for the delayed response - net problems!

Do you know the make and model of the mattress? It sounds like you were either given wrong information, or like you say, a gimmick.0 -
Unfortunately we just tried out a few to see if we prefered memory foam to standard and never took notes. Liked a memory foam one but were concerned about heat in the summer. The sales guy then pointed us in the direction of the mystery dual mattress - I've looked at the Reid site and can't see anything that is ringing any bells so I'm wondering if we were just fed a line!0

It is most likely that the mattress is reflex foam with latex foam on top. It wouldn't be designed so that you can sleep on the reflex side.
Was it a foam only mattress, and what was the price?
EDIT
Would it be this one?:
Sealy Memory Dream Mattress
The Memory Deluxe includes Sealys unique 7 zone pressure relief inlay of memory foam and innergetic latex. The high loft Micro-Quilted Mattress with knitted fabric offers a medium comfort rating. Also featured is Sealy Edge Guard, including Tencel fibre for natural cooling and outstanding moisture management. To complete the bed, there are large Capacity Storage with upholstered drawer fronts. Headboard not included.0 -
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the help.
The price was around £700 and according to the sales guy (who I now doubt) could definitely be used on either side. It was far to soft for us so probably no springs? To be honest I really wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been as it was our first trip round the mattress shops. All that lying down didn't help my memory!! I just noted the dual memory foam / latex bit and figured I'd do some internet research thinking that a few companies might offer similar products.
It may be the one you've highlighted as it is available at Reid and the price looks similar and the spec seems to loosely tie in with the sales chat. There also seems to be a spring version - Sealy Posturepedic Gold Dream Deluxe that is more expensive.0
