Hello.
I need your help. A friend is in the market for a new bed but we are now totally flummoxed by the technical specs. Someone help!
She has set her heart on the double Treviso beadstead from Dreams at £528 (She saved for a year). They want £40 extra for sprung slats, £39 for a 10 year guarantee and £35 for delivery = £603. She negotiated it down to £575!
I suggested the Verese beadstead for £195 coz it didn't look that different to me I didnt get very far with that argument - she went on some crusade about the differences between real and faux leather!:D
On the mattress side, she is after the memory foam type. The budget is £500 max for a double. She fell in love with the Chaucer mattress instore at Dreams but at £1200 there is no way she can afford it! Ideally the whole bed should cost less than £1000. We have been shopping around and identified one we like (purely in terms of feel) - Salus Memory 1500 for £695 at JoySleep. Did ome shopping around and found it for £575 delivered at Roomes.
Just to be sure, I suggested a check on the forums on this site to make sure the products are good and hopefully to try and save money. Thats where it all got very confusing, I have a few questions -
Whats wrong with encapulated foam springs (apparently they are on this mattress). - From other threads they appear to be a no-no but I cannot work out why. What's the difference?
Do sprung slats add anything to comfort especially with these big pocket spring plus memory foam matresses or are they just a gimmick?
Is it true that some mattresses are not suited for slatted beds? How do you tell?
Any suggestions of a good mattress for this kind of bed which is comparable or better than the Salus 1500 for either the same or less money?
Thanks for all your help.

One thing i would say is that dreams are a rip off, my friend used to work there and they mark everything up so high. what gets me is that every week they have a sale ending monday. its a joke trading standards should have a look at them.
There are plenty on online retailers that offer far better quality beds and mattresses for a lot less money.
I recently bought a memorylux mattress with coolmax cover and its fantastic.
I also tried out a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam on top which was also excellent and you can get some real good ones, slumberland did a really good one.
hope that helps0 -
It is a completely personal choice with mattresses but as you spend a vast proportion of your life sleeping it is worth investing in a good one.
Having gone around various show rooms testing the mattresses on display, we concluded that we were looking for a king sized, high pocket spring count (for good support) and latex topping (we preferred it to memory foam because it 1) springs back quicker and 2) is more breathable than foam which will hopefully mean less sweaty!) to provide the comfort, body moulding and durability we wanted from a mattress.
Dreams had a mattress that was unique to their stores from Rest Assured, called Sicily; it had the highest pocket spring count we'd come across in all the stores (2400 pocket springs with latex) but was £949! We looked on the Rest Assured website and discovered they had a specifications document that listed all their different mattresses which was really useful to determine which ones to investigate (we'd found that everywhere seems to call the same thing LOTS of different names or have their own special version - which makes price comparisons difficult).
Anyway, this led us to searching for the "Essence 2600 Pocket & Latex Mattress". Rest Assured had a promotion on its site for Furniture123, which said it offered a price promise (and was £709.98 in its sale). So when we found Best Price Beds offering the mattress for £579 (delivered free in 48 hours) we enquired about their price promise - but they took 3 days to conclude that they were unable to fulfil their "promise" so we went with Best Price Beds.
We ordered Wednesday afternoon and delivered Friday morning! Excellent :T
Really very happy with our choice of mattress and would recommend Best Price Beds to anyone.
PS Sorry I can't include the links to what I've been talking about as I'm a newbie0 -

I would challenge her to spot the difference between genuine leather and good quality modern faux leather. I have seen genuine leather that I was convinced was faux leather, and vice versa.
There are actually no benefits that I can think of in having genuine leather, but there is a huge financial advantage in faux leather. On the mattress side, she is after the memory foam type. The budget is £500 max for a double. She fell in love with the Chaucer mattress instore at Dreams but at £1200 there is no way she can afford it! Ideally the whole bed should cost less than £1000. How on earth anyone is taken in by all they hype and gimmicks in the big bed stores is beyond me. Their prices are usually well over the actual value of the product, but they con people with fake sales. Why do you think all the products on sale at Dreams are only available in Dreams stores??..........it's because they give a price promise, but they are the only people who sell them. So they can sell at whatever price they like.Just to be sure, I suggested a check on the forums on this site to make sure the products are good and hopefully to try and save money. Reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs are yet another gimmick. They are smaller, far cheaper, and far less supportive than full size steel pocket springs. They are used by many manufacturers so that they can produce cheap mattresses that contain pocket springs. As I said the springs are far smaller than the full size ones. They are sometimes made from plastic, and I have actually seen them made from barrel shaped foam (well I suppose technically a spring doesn't have to be metal).
These springs are actually surrounded by reflex foam. So due to them not giving very good support, and not allowing air to circulate through the spring layer to dissipate the heat from the memory foam on top. Then they lack the two main advantages of full size steel pocket springs.
To the untrained eye they are aften difficult to spot. However one huge giveaway is if the mattress comes rolled up and vacuum packed then it doesn't contain full size springs, as this would damage them.Do sprung slats add anything to comfort especially with these big pocket spring plus memory foam matresses or are they just a gimmick?
If you use a pocket sprung only, or non turn pocket sprung and memory foam mattress on a slatted base, and the slats are more than 1" apart, then the springs will try and push down between the slats which can damage them. Many retailers, and even some manufacturers will tell you that they are ok to use with slatted beds. The truth is that you can use them, but they simply won't last as long.
If you have a mattress that is two sided pocket spring with memory/latex foam, then the memory foam on the bottom will spread the weight out. So you can use it with gaps of up to 3".
If your mattress is pocket sprung only, or non turn memory/latex foam with pocket springs, then you will need to lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to spread the weight out.
An open coil sprung mattress is fine with any type of base.0 -

I'll repost my reply to your post in another thread where you mentioned the seller:Ouch!!!!!.....you didn't really pay their prices for a reflex foam/memory foam mattress did you?? They are very expensive for an on line seller.
Coolmax doesn't cool you down, it is a wicking fabric that takes the moisture away from your body, and stops you feeling clammy. If you want a fabric that actually regulates the temperature, then you would need to go for something like Climasmart or Outlast.0 -

It looks like you have don a huge amount of research before buying your mattress. Unfortunately you were given sales hype rather than genuine advice.
Hopefully your mattress will last many years and be comfortable. If not then have a good read through the threads on MSE.0 -

To get much better quality for much less money stay away from all the big retailers, and all the big brand names. Instead go for smaller independent manufacturers as many of them still make their mattresses by hand instead of automated production like the big names. They quality of the components is also usually better.
For the best value for money buy on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee where you can unpack and sleep on the mattress (read their terms and conditions). It will then be in the sellers interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time. Otherwise it will cost them money.0 -
Hi Tim
The mattresses I mentioned above say that they are fully hand-made.
This is one of them:

I'm another one just starting out in my quest for a new mattress. We went round the shops just to see what we liked and one shop had a mattress with memory foam on one side and latex on the other.
We sleep in the attic of our house which is tropical in the summer and baltic in the winter. This seemed like a good idea as the memory foam would be a good winter mattress and the latex best in the summer however I can't help feeling it's all a bit of a gimmick. Anyone used one of these combo mattresses? If they are a no no - would latex be the best thing if heat will be an issue?
Thanks for any assistance.0 -

Many say they are fully hand made, but are actually made by semi automated production. However the one in the link may be fully hand made, but it still has one of the worst gimmicks in the bed industry (the pillow top). These are very comfortable when new but in time all the loose fillings move about, which means that you end up sleeping in a hollow. A pillow top also makes the mattress non turn, which will mean that the mattress won't last anywhere near as long.
The side stitching that it mentions is used in most mattresses with full size pocket springs. What you actually see in the picture is just cosmetic, and is known as jump and tack. The side stitching will be hiddedn behind this.0
