Virgin Avtice/ARC help!

I've been reading previous threads, and my pickle's a little different but follows the same pattern as all the other posts.

I was on a pay monthly membership, and cancelled my direct debit in early august 2009, then received a phone call from virgin on the 17th August (the deadline for cancellations for the following month) telling me they could see my direct debit had been cancelled, but to cancel my membership I would have to send an email by the end of the day. So I did. End of story (she thought...)!

I moved house in September.

Fast forward to January and I'm getting almost daily phone calls from a number leaving messages telling me to contact ARC urgently.

I called Virgin and spoke to the gym I was a member of, and then a member of the customer services team. They told me they could find no trace of the email I had sent and that as far as they were concerned my membership wasn't cancelled, and before passing my contract on to ARC they had sent me letters to my old address telling me I owed them 3 months worth of membership.

Now, I definitely definitely sent that email and there seems to be plenty of stories of confirmation letters going astray (quite conveniently for ol Virgin, eh?) BUT suppose it didn't get there for whatever reason, they called me almost daily trying to get me to get the friend I took along when I signed up to join. Why couldn't they drop me a phone call? Or an email? ARC certainly had no problem doing that!!!

It's so irritating by the sounds of it they've probably been sending all sorts to the old address. I have only spoken to ARC the once and all they told me was that I would not be charged the £30 late fee as I had moved house. Nice of them. I didn't give them my new address.

Does anyone know if it's possible for them to take further action? And will my credit rating be affected? I want to buy a house in the next couple of years and have never been in debt before. I'm just writing a letter to Virgin head office now to post at the weekend recorded delivery.

Ooo and the guy I spoke to from Virgin said I owe them £160 (guessing £132 for 3 months membership and £30 admin.) I didn't have ARC on the phone long enough to find out what that's been bumped up to!

Thanks!
