My Dad a self employed plastered went out the other evening to quote a job. Skidded and twanged another car, apparently not alot of damage. Anyways he drove off - I know better & so should he! Anyways he had a pang of guilt and went back to the car but it had gone. He has received a letter this morning from the police to ask who was driving the car at the time of the accident. He has filled it in, but is now worried as to what will happen next? Any ideas anyone? Thank you

Did that have a bearing on the accident ;)

Depends on whether or not anyone witnessed the accident. My own feeling is that he should have stopped, and if there was no-one there, he should have left his details. As it now stands, the police will take a dim view of it, especially if he didn't report the accident to them. He's leaving himself open to some serious charges.

Worst cast scenario:- Failure to stop or failure to report carries maximums of:-
6 months pokey, £5,000 fine, discretionary ban, or 5-10 points.... He'd better hope he can find a good lawyer :(

lol - sorry no! goodness only knows why i told the world lol!

Thank you, he has no previous convictions for anything. no speeding etc. so here's to hoping he doesnt get banned - banned will mean him losing job, losing home etc. and a burden on society! (he should have thought about this before driving away!) xx

  • It is good that he did go back eventually. I imagine he was quite shocked at first. If he just explains to the police that he went to get a pen and his insurance details, but when he got back the car had gone.

A neighbour hit my car and damaged the mirror, they only put the note informing me about it on my car the following day so it does happen
  • as a self employed plasterer one would assume he had pen and paper in the car for his work. i.e receipts written quots etc. in any case he should of atleast waited a while to see if anyone returned to the vehicle and then informed them if he he waited a while and no owner returned and he genuinly had no pen n paper he could of saved the vehicle details in his phone as a txt template and phoned his insurance company who would of contacted them person who owned the car. he could of also informed the police who would of given him the info he needed. even though he returned to try and give details doesnt make recompence in the laws eyes, he recieved a letter so there would of been someone round/or a traffic cam who cought the incident and then reported it to the police. in my eyes he should of at least informed the police or informed his insurance company and at least took the reg of the vehicle he hit.

i suspect that he may have a summons to court if the cps accept the case.

did he report it to his insurance within 24 hours?

you have 24hrs to report the incident to the police also so if he had guilty conciance he could of called them told them where when what vehicle and if the report came in about it they would of said who was responsable and give them your details.
