Charity Vehicle Insurance.

Just a general query for anyone who has had cause to purchase car insurance for a charity vehicle (not a van though, van insurance is surprisingly easy to find:) ).

Our local First Responder group is looking to acquire a vehicle for use of any of the members of the group when on call. All the drivers are over 21 (maybe even 25, it's not polite to ask the women their age after all ;) )with clean licences, and some have completed advanced driver courses (some have even been police trained for blue light response, but that will not be used on the vehicle). The main reason for looking into this outside of the Ambulance Service is because their costs are quite high (approx. £3000p/a, although that does include the vehicle lease) which is too much to support on our own. Getting our own vehicle is relatively easy though (and cheaper) with servicing etc. being done through a local garage as a 'donation' to the community.

I know there must be a few forumites out there who have tried to do similar, so let me know how it went, and if there are any pitfalls to watch out for.

Thanks.

I would contact a broker, they should have dealt with similar requests before and know the best way to go :)

    You have a PM.

Restricting drivers to those with advanced qualifications will bring premiums down, as will taking a huge voluntary excess. There are insurers around though willing to do a multi-vehicle, multi-driver policy for a charity. Trouble is finding them...

I fear that you will find that the cost of insurance is in a similar ballpark to the Ambulance Service fee - at least until a few years of claim-free history are acquired.

The problem will be the lack of verifiable claims history and the use of the vehicle, which insurers will look at with a great deal of circumspection, even if not under blue lights.

You need to speak to a proper insurance broker who deals with commercial and specialist motor insurance.

First that comes to mind for this type is http://www.towergatemia.co.uk, (I have no connection with them).

May also be a good idea to look into whether the Ambulance Service will add the donated vehicle to their motor fleet policy and thus reduce the £3,000 fee by deducting the cost of the vehicle lease.

Thanks for your help folks. Ed and raskazz, very helpful. Gordikin, I'm ashamed to admit I forgot about that :) At least I have hope that it's possible, and that's always a help.
