Its part of the contract with Sky that you have your box plugged into the telephone line. You can make calls as normal it will have no affect whatsoever.

You can risk not plugging it in and may get away with it for ages, but I do know 2 people who have eventually had warning letters hat if they did not connect to the line that their sky service would be discontinued.

Sky use it for software updates, to check viewing cards and you can use it to view bill etc at no charge and for interactive services often at a charge.

If you do not have a phone socket near by you can buy a sender unit that will send a phone signal across the electrical mains system in your house, I got mine from Maplins and it works just fine.

    .

Software updates are via the dish, not the telephone connection.
  • the telephone connection is so that sky can telephone the box to make sure everything is ok with it.

most people don't really need to have it connected, its quite hard to buy movies without it connected though.

The only time its nescesary to have it connected is if you have multiroom! This is very important so they know both boxes are in the same house as they will work connected to any dish with the card in. With multiroom a tenner, you could easily have 2 houses connected for less
