sometimes it reverses fine, othertimes as soon as i try to treverse the gear jumps out, other times it can take numberous attempts to get the car to stay in reverse gear....but it will eventually reverse....
any ideas ??

It is possible that the cable is gone. It could also be worn/lose gear linkage/worn gear box or engine mounts\worn reserve gear. Rubber stiffen when it cold does it get better when the engine warms up? WD40 should soften the belt in theory. Either that or it'll slip quietly instead.
