Bank changed my address without consent and sent account statements to someone else

My ex-wife and i divorced 6-7 years. It was not amicable and we still don't get on.
My son has a savers account at Natwest which is both under my name and ex's name (reverted back to her maiden name) so we can each deposit money at the bank into his account.

I also have my current account and a new joint account which pays the mortgage etc with my new partner at Natwest.

My ex went to the bank last week to change her address on my son's account (we each get a monthly bank statement).

I found out this morning that not only did the imbecile at the bank change the address for my sons account but also my current account and joint account to hers. Which she has no authority over as we've been divorced years. I also found out that obvisouly she has received a bank statement to my current account and joint account and opened them.

How and why the hell did this happen. Just give all my personal and financial details to basically my enemy, great.

What can i do about this? I want something done but don't know how to go about it.

I will also be closing my account and moving to another bank.

This is a serious breach of data protection and a complaint in writing is very much the way to go. An apology from the bank is definitely in order.

I'm afraid that the only use the banks have for the data protection act is to cover their own backsides and certainly NOT yours. Complain definitely in writing and preferably recorded post

It's a criminal offence to open mail, not addressed to you.

Ditto that - I hate it when people take it upon themselves to 'sort things out' without double checking!
They had NO BUSINESS amending details for other accounts...if they had concerns they should have contacted you direct and CHECKED.

    No it isn't!

It's a criminal offence to interfere with the mail PRIOR to delivery to the address on it.
I am perfectly entitled to open mail delivered to my house if it is addressed to 'someone' at my house. Out of courtesy I don't open the mail that comes addressed to the previous occupant. I do wish they would tell the person who sends them a Christmas card every year that they moved...10 years ago!

If mail came addressed to my ex-husband though I might well open it as I would want to know why the (insert expletive) he was getting mail delivered here having been left 6 years. And then (if he was lucky) I might give it to him telling him it had been opened in error.

Well I'm sure the fact that you consider it a criminal offense will stop his ex-wife from opening mail about his bank account. I would not like to place any trust in that even if it were true
