If you have a local Sainsburys then they stock almond oil quite cheaply.

Thanks I bought some yesterday and have been using it to moisturise my hands and cuticles. Do you use it as a body moisturiser?

From a chemist you can buy aqueous cream (prob spelt very wrongly) which is the base of most moisturisers. It's just a plain white fragrance free moisuriser base. And you can usually get about 500g of it for a few £.

Thanks for the link. I understand it comes in a solid form, can you apply it as a body butter in this way or do you have to melt it?

It melts in your hands - one of its unique properties is that it can move from liquid to solid any number of times without going rancid. Just have some in your hand, rub your hands together and it will melt. If it's too hard at the moment just stick it in your airing cupboard for a little while or give it a short zap in the microwave. I add it to my morning hot tea and leave the spoon in the cup for a little bit and then use it to scoop out the oil.

I find it works best for skin when ingested rather than applied, however each to their own! No police here. :j

The BEST shower/soap/shampoo I have found which doesn't have any nasties in is Dr Bronner's products.

http://www.drbronner.com/DBMS/LS.htm - USA site but there are plenty of UK suppliers. I got it by mail order.

I got the hint from a post on here and have used it since. I dilute it by half (it's runny to start with) and it lasts ages. Silky smooth and lathers up extremely well.

  • Hi Bubby, Sounds like air con and heating have taken their toll on the skin. Itching is a sign of too much warmth sometimes on the skin, which irritates it further, you scratch it, it gets drier! Try the Body Shop - they have a vitamin E range and hopefully there will be a body cream in there that will sort out the dryness - vitamin E will energise the skin. Also anything with shea butter would be good as well. Sounds like whatever you are putting on at the moment, the skin is getting through it quickly because it is so dehydrated. I find aqueous cream only good if I get a touch of dermatitis. Astral from Boots will do good on the shins of your legs at night, and sounds like you just need to keep up moisturising for maybe a week or so to see the results. Also I would take a b vitamin complex - this will help the underlayers of the skin. In just a week on the vits you will see results! Good luck x

Thanks just realised my bottle is actually sweet almond oil....wonder what the difference is? Got it in holland and barrett or what ever its called.

sweet almond is for skin. it's much lighter and absorbs easier so is more expensive.

    almond is for frying food.

Cow udder cream. About £5 for a huge tub. Honestly. (I used to work in a pharmacy in my student days, which had a vetinary section, and the pharmacist used to decant cow udder cream into small pots to sell as his "special hand cream". (Well, you never see milk maids with sore hands now do ya ;))

I'm intrigued, does it taste like coconut? Are there any health benefits? What difference has it made to you skin?

Also interested by this, do you know the ingredients? Where would you get it from?
Thank you for this site Martin

I have used v.c.o. for around 7 years now , its brill stuff . I get mine from www.thecoconutoilcompany.co.uk tried quite a few different brands over this time but definitly find this the best taste and one of the cheapest. I purchase 6 tubs at a time share with a friend . Virgin coconut oil has a long shelf life after opening, it does not need to be kept in fridge , i have used it on my face , hair , and eat off a spoon. 3 yr old grandson gets little bits exzema now and again vco soon clears it up, (rub it on ).
