Real unemployment 22%

I wonder what is the real true unemployment?

Its a bit like how everyone knows the real inflation figures are nothing like the Government ones.

I watched that for about 20 seconds and just had to turn the guy off.

I dont beleive that nearly a quarter of people in the US are unemployed who are in need of and actually seeking work.

I read somewhere that only about 70% (of those of working age) are in employment. So that makes 30% unemployment in the UK.

The government figures are a joke, that's why they've pushed 3 million onto sickness benefits instead of unemployment benefits to the hide the true figure.

    So what?

Say the figures are overstated, what does that mean?

We know what the benefits bill is, it's published information.

If the number is understated, it was also understated last year, the year before, 2007, 2006, etc. The method of counting hasn't changed.

So, so what? In fact the numbers include housewives, people with early retirement, students, and many other groups. The only number that counts is the size of the benefits budget.

The official stats are 2.49 million unemployed, 2.7 million on invalidity benefit and approx 30 million are classed as employed.

I'd put money on the fact that 2 million of those on invalidity benefit, are just lazy shysters and are quite capable of working, if there were two million jobs available.

Still think that anyone out of work for 6 months, should be forced to do some form of community service or charity work and this should be mandatory.

In many countries in Europe, you must work for a period of time to be eligible for benefits, rather than here where some kids aim to do nothing for the rest of their lives.

I find it hard to even think about not working. Times are slow so I am not going at 100 miles an hour these days. I like that positive stress. Even with retirement looming I can`t see either my wife or myself not doing something. My Father was just the same.

Ok, so if those on invalidity benefit were classed as unemployed, the true unemployment benefit figures would be approx 5,200,000 out of a working population of 30,000,000. That is an unemployment rate of over 17%.

The US measure unemployment differently to us - presumably because of the way unemployment insurance works - not everyone is able to claim.

They (Bureau of Labor Statistics) conduct a poll of 60k households every month and if you are out of work but have looked for work during the last 4 weeks you are classed as unemployed -

If you are out of work and have not looked for work in the last 4 weeks you are not unemployed -

The results for the 60k poll are extrapolated across the working population.

The result published is the U3 unemployment rate. The official government rate. Currently 10%.

There are actually 6 unemployment measures in the US - U1 through to U6 - all include or exclude specific groups.

The one a lot of people look at is the U6 - which includes those who have not looked for work in the past 4 weeks but want a job - it also include those who have taken part time work for economic reasons instead of full time work. This figure is currently 17.3%.

A more interesting figure is that there are 23million in the wealth-creating private sector (probably nearer 20 million full time equivalents ??) supporting a 61 million UK population
