Ta for the post - i'm after a drill for general (basic ruin the house!) DIY, any recommendations? dont know what i should belooking out for :-/
If you want a corded drill you should look for its power in watts the more watts the more power, additional things like 13mm chuck and more than one speed are helpful
If you are looking for a cordless drill there are many things to look for. The higher the voltage the more power it should punch, but recently it would seem that 18v has become somewhat of a standard for most work. One thing alot of people don't look for and then get stuffed with is the RPM, you are going to be needing at least a drill capable of 1400rpm for drilling into brick or blockwork this should be variable also i.e. 0 - 1400rpm. Two batteries are a god send when doing a BIGGER DIY job these also need a high MaH rating. The higher the MaH the longer the charge will stay in the battery....look for 1.7 or 1700 Mah. Gears and torque control are good also.
If you want all of this in one drill you should check out my post here:

Have you noticed whenever Argos have a good deal on in the sales, even if you go in the first day, surprise surprise they are 9 times out of 10 out of stock! This has happened to me on numerous occasions now. Yes some people will get lucky but I bet for the majority of us it’s always the same old story. If they haven't got the goods in the first place they shouldn't advertise them!No reliance should be placed on the above.0
