Changing bathroom taps

I want to change my bath and basin taps in my bathroom, shut off my hot water fine, but my cold water doesn't seem to shut off, even though it is the right tap (and the only one).
Didn't bother changing them in the end last night but now my heating won't work?!?!
Any suggestions?

You should have a stop valve OUTSIDE somewhere (back yard / end of drive) . Shut off the water there .Growing OLD is Compulsory
Growing UP is OPTIONAL !!0 -
The stop !!!!!! for the cold water in my house is near the wahing machine - perhaps have a look there.
Don't knwo if that will solve the heating issue though :-[One day I want to be the pigeon...... and not the statue!0
