Kitchens

Hi All

Me and the other half have just bought our first house. It needs a lot of work doing to it but mainly the kitchen. I have been looking around all over for kitchens but have been either put off by price or the poor quality. We are not looking to spend that much as we are ftb's but we want the kitchen to last a few years. Has anybody got any companies that they would recommend or any websites that I should use to find a nice but cheap kitchen. We have all the appliancies all ready so it is just the doors and carcasses that we require

Any help would be really appreciated

As ftb , money is short

Couple of years ago , i would have sent you to .. shock /horror  MFI.

Their basic range was cheap and cheerful , I never had any problems .
But times have changed . Try your local 'shed'/ Really nice to be able to pop down and pick up the pieces from the shelf.

Would be surprised if even the cheapest kitchen does not still look good in that time frame.

You will get posters that recommend spending more , but I usually get fed up with the style . long before anything really needs replacing.

I take it its a DIY job ??

I love my WICKES kitchen. Had it fitted just over 18 months ago and still love it.
  • Yes it will be a DIY job but my dad is a sparky, partners brother a builder and best mate a joiner so will have plenty of help.

By saying local shed what do you mean by that? Money is short but we can stretch to several hundred pounds. The kitchen is not massive its only 3.3m by 2.6m so we would not need lots of cupboards.

Just wanting a cheep and cheerful kitchen without spending loads

I think "sheds" means the big DIY stores, like B&Q, Wickes, Homebase, etc. Wickes does seem to be the best quality of these, from what I've seen so far.

Sheds , as stated , BQ / wickes / homebase etc

check this thread .. Ikea or Wickes
A few hundred will only get you a basic range , but don't knock them until you see them .

One tip , don't spend a lot on the doors/ carcasses , save it for the worktops.
Good worktops . a fancy tap and good lights make a kitchen.

Have you thought about just repalcing the doors and worktops, this can vastly improve the kitchen ?

We are just getting a Howdens kitchen being delivered next week, a couple of friends have them and are good quality

They are cheap as well, we got 9 units with soild oak frames and oak vaneered panels, 2x worktops, 3x upstands, wine rack, soft closing doors for £1400 inc VAT and delivery

Really depends on your budget i guess, how much do you want to spend

    IKEA always.

but do becareful with built-in appliances they are not all standard so your new kitchen might not fit the appliance, thats with any kitchen not just IKEA
