Loft conversion in new house

The few loft conversions I have been in have suffered from being horribly stuffy when its warm, and freezing cold when cold. The air gap above the roof keeps the temperatures in the rooms stable, but I'm not sure how well modern insulation materials can mimic the effects of the air void.

Someone I know is thinking about a loft extension, but £40k is close to 2-story extension price levels in the midlands!

Our conversion is going to cost us £41000 plus the cost of the bathroom fittings which we are getting ourselves. It is a fixed price quote and includes all the fees, plans etc.

themanbearpig, we have no option but to go up with a loft conversion as we don't have space on our plot to build an extension. The other option would have been to move, but the cost of moving to a bigger property in our area is a lot more than the cost of the loft conversion.
We did think about the possible stuffiness, but we went and looked at 3 conversions done by the company who are doing ours and the owners all tell us that they haven't really had any problems. I'm hoping that by having both velux and dormer windows we'll be able to open windows to help ventilate as neccessary.

The prices sound pretty similar then which is reassuring.
We don't have the room for an extension either and since they are going to be bedrooms I quite like the idea they are upstairs. Must admit hadn't thought much about temperature control so will raise that with loft company (thanks).
Hopefully all done by the end of summer - can't wait.
