Self employed with no work. WTC FTC JSA help please.

Hi, I'm self employed and have no work at the moment and would like to become employed again, My wife works 20 hours per week at £6.46 at the local school and only gets paid in term time, I have three children under 16 living at home. I have a mortgage and pay full council tax etc. We currently get Wtc £138pw and Ftc £75 pw and child benefit £185 per 4 wks. I'm afraid to contact the Job Centre and sign on because if I have any of the above reduced I could well lose my house £570 mortgage per mth. We have reduced are monthly out goings and try to eat on £5 per day and I've given up smoking and now walk instead of drive where ever possible. I'm looking for work on the internet but not having much success, Cornwall is very seasonal and sadly it's not the right time of year.

What advice can anybody offer me, I feel like my whole world is falling apart and I'm concerned for my mental health.

Many thanks

You wouldnt be able to claim JSA as your partner works. Have you notified tax credits that you are no longer working?

That would depend on NICs, surely?

I'm afraid to notify the tax credits at this stage. I cannot live on any less money.

epsilondraconis I'm trying my hardest to hang in there, very tough at times but I have no choice but to hope. I've been on the entitleto site and I can apply for council tax benefit, which I've request the forms.

I just feel so guilty and keep going over in my head of all the money I've spent in the past that I wish I hadn't.

You need to tell them now otherwise you are risking an overpayment that will have to be paid back.

Generally, self employed contributions will not help you qualify for contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.

  • I've spoken to my book keeper and he says I've made a net profit this year to date of £3500 and I've worked labouring and made £2000 Cis, my wife has been paid £2200 to date. I thought I only had to tell tax credits my final net profit at year end?

But at the moment you are not working but claiming WORKING tax credit. Its a benefit for people in work, and you are not. So therefor not entitled to it.
  • I can see what your saying but being self employed is not like being in employment, I worked 7 days a week 12/14 hours a day trying to get my business up and running, no holidays, no b'hols, certainly no sick days so I guess i'm on holiday right now then. I don't have a weekly wage I just paid myself money if there was ever anything left in the business acc out after all other expenses, hence only have made £3500. If work comes in I'll go straight back to 7 days aweek if nessasary.

As your partner is working you will still get some WTC but you must update them that you are working 0 hours a week just now incase it does alter the amount you recieve.
