JSA -a couple where one partner is not a full-time student?

Hi

I attend uni full time.
My boyfriend is currently out of work but looking.
We live together.

Do you know if a couple can claim JSA, even though one partner is a full-time student?

Thanks :)

No, as to claim JSA you have to look for and be available for work and as a student you are not.

You should be getting student finance to support you.

Surely your boyfriend could just claim JSA singly (but declaring you as his partner)..?

If you BF has paid the appropriate NICs then he will be able to claim contributions based JSA for 26 weeks. When this period is up, or if he hasn't made the right contributions, he would have to claim means tested JSA which would be based on your income as a couple, including your student funding. This might well mean that he wasn't eligible for anything.

My son and his girlfriend are in a similar situation - he's no longer a student, she is still full time uni student. As he was quite clear about the fact that one of the housemates was his girlfriend, they take her student loans into account, and he was declared ineligible for any means tested JSA.
