Just changed tarfiffs with nPower with a noticeable difference!

Just had Martin's email through reccomending a quick check of Gas & Electricity prices. Went to energyhelpline.com and EDF came up cheapest but there was £50 charge if I left them! The next cheapest happened to be nPower for both electric & gas, who I'm already with on the Web 14 tariff. Energyhelpline.com reccomended the 'Sign On-Line 17' tariff. I was curious to see exactly what benefit this would bring before changing so I looked at the actual price for units. The figures are below...
Web 14 On-Line 17 Difference
Gas Standing Charge 44.1p 40.27p -3.83p (Per day)
Gas Unit Charge 2.986p 2.492 -0.494p

Electric Standing Charge 16.7p 9.45p -7.25p (Per Day)
Electric Unit Charge 7.99p 5.75p -2.24p

It's always good to know you've moved to a cheaper tariff but it's nice to actually see the price difference. Just looking at the standing charges I'll save £40.44 per year. I've also avoided any fees for changing companies!

Just rang nPower and submitted a meter reading and it's done, SWEET:rotfl:

You can't base a comparison by looking at the unit rates only you need to know your actual yearly consumption, but given that all the rates are cheaper you will be better off.

    HOWEVER.....

You seemed to have missed the fact that the npower tariff mentioned has a £40 cancelation fee that covers exactly the same period as the EDF tariff mentioned.

    * Note: I have been on npowers website and can not see any information on the cancelation fee. I have checked three seperate price comparison web sites and they all list WEB v17 and SOL v17 with a £20 cancelation fee per fuel- So Duel Fuel will be £40.

It's not just the unit charges that you need to look at, but all the make up of the cost if that is what you are inclined to to.

e.g. with nPower, there are discounts totalling £105 included within the annual cost - something you won't get if you don't pay 12 monthly payments with them by DD.
... and you were worried about paying just £50 extra should you leave EDF early.

  • Sorry for the confusion, I'm currently with nPower! EDF just came up cheaper on the list of possible tariffs. I'm guessing nPower won't charge me for changing tariffs with them?

What was wrong with iterations 15 and 16?
  • I was on Npower SOL14 and 15 and 16 were more expensive unless you were a low user of energy.

I looked at nPower SOL17 and they are a serious reduction from thier previous tariffs got me to wondering whether nPower are trying to win back customers with low prices.

    Never assume....

If you swap to a cheaper tariff within the canelatiton period you will be charged.

The cancellation fees that are mentioned above refer to what you would be charged if you change from tariffs avaialbe now. it makes no difference who you were with, I think you are confused.
