I use justhostme.co.uk and they are very good, low cost and easy to deal with.

Setup is easy through CPanel and you get so much more for you money.

I do all my own work, would make it easier with a content management system. MySQL and PHP is a !!!!! when you don't know it very well, but it's fun to learn :)

Need to get my static IP, but I ain't paying my ISP double my current package plus that on top for Business Broadband :D

I pay an extra £2 per month for a stactic IP and Cpanel installs Joomla et al for you, I code in T-SQL and C# so not to familiar with PHP and it works for me. ;)

Yeah, but what I mean is I REALLY do my own hosting (i.e it's on my PC) so I control everything

Bit of a kicker, because means I need a static IP from my ISP if I want a fixed addy, but not too bothered as yet. It's more for my IT Development

Sometimes I wish I stayed with dedicated hosting as someone else already has it setup (Fast T1 Speeds, Static IP, cPanel, etc) but then again I remember my site is only small and personal and the fact that I control everything bar the internet connection and following bad experiences with darkenhosting I decided I wanted to control everything on my website (backups, updates). Since some hosters don't support certain scripts and languages etc gives me more flexibility

Without doubt dedicated is best and usually cheaper, but for me it's not and it's also out of preference :)

I've never done T-SQL or C#, I'm a bit thick when it comes to learning computer languages. Could do them, just never bothered. Mainly focussed on getting my MCSE and CCNA first

  • if you want to host yourself, set up your server and use something like dynadns to get round the static ip. combine that with a bit of port forwarding on your router and hey presto... sit back and wait for the hackers to play with your server...
Seriously, pay a hosting company for a secure solution, you can always install Xampp on your in house server for development, then FTP the working site to the hosted domain.

Already done that, dynamic IP is setup and ports forward.

Been self-hosting for nearly 2 years and not hacked once yet so I think I'm doing OK. I'm working on locking it down securely anyway and then I'm going to have it tested to see if it's secure but site has been untouched and I've got decent levels of security so I'm good.

Add to that I'm going to change over to a hardware firewall and cisco catalyst for more control and it's going to be a lot harder for the average script kiddy. Nothing is 100% but make it really hard to crack and only the most determined of hackers will try only to find nothing but crap :D

As I mentioned, I'm doing this for my own IT Development too. I'm trying to get into Ethical Hacking, so I'm working on all backdoors and common intrusion methods.

The page you were seeing IS the home page (the old one). I put that there because I'm completely rebuilding and redesigning the website, didn't want people seeing what's going on it whilst I work on it. So I'm not putting anything on the home page until I'm finished

  • are you hosting your own server on an adsl line? how do you cope with the limited bandwidth upstream? does your isp have a 'reasonable use' poilcy? you might want to check up on that, they might get a bit shirty with you hosting a web site over a domestic account.
