Are Airmiles worth it?

Hi there, I've never posted on this board, so please be gentle with me :o

I've just seen in the weekly email that Tesco are offering to double up on airmiles. I've never used airmiles before, but have been debating. I don't travel often, but I'm hoping to travel to the US later in the year and stay for a few months.

I have over £100 in Tesco points, which by my calculations would bring me a little under 5000 airmiles with the current deal.

Unfortunately Airmiles does not seem to fly to my chosen destination, but obviously Airmiles would not pay the full amount at any rate.

From what I can see, doing a like for like comparison with Expedia, it seems that I would actually be paying *more* for the flights by using Airmiles, than if I just paid outright. Am I missing something? Or are airmiles only worthwhile if you can use them to pay the full amount?

Thanks

I'm not an expert but We have been to Prague and my husband is flying to California with our Airmiles (me and my 21 yr old are going to CA too but using Air Canada vouchers).

How we look at it is because we get Airmiles by converting our Tescos clubcard vouchers, We haven't actually paid for the flights. Yes, we have checked out products that have extra clubcard points (we're still eating brazil nuts!) and we are thinking about getting one of the mobile phones as a spare one for the car and then we get 1000 clubcard points... not sure yet!

We wouldn't have paid cash for our flights so we wouldn't have been able to have the holidays! Thanks Mr T and Airmiles!!

Click the type destination bit and type the destination. Also untick the direct flights box. Also play around with the flexible dates box, ticking and unticking it on various searches. It is worth having a good search to see what can show up.

remember if you sign up for the credit card you get 1,500 bonus miles on top of the 5k you have if you swap your vouchers.

If you want referring to the credit card... let me know as i would get 200 bonus miles :D

Just booked a flight from LHR to BOM for £130 plus about 2k miles... also booked 4 return trips to Jersey (lad night out) for 3000 miles (all from credit card sign up's).

I think they are good but i cannot work out what they are worth is real cash.
  • Thanks guys.

Cundall, I don't think my credit rating would appreciate me applying for a credit card right now, having just opened a new savings account, but I will keep it in mind, thank you.

I didn't fiddle about for very long, but I think what I came up with was a flight which was going to cost me around 6,500 airmiles *plus* another £900, versus expedia which was offering the flights for £1300 (this is for myself and 2 kids)....which granted is obviously a £400 saving, but it just seems a lot on top of all those airmiles.
