1 wire is split into a brown and a red and are in little box things with holes.
1 box has one of the red wires- and another red wire from a bit of cable that splits into red,in the box, and a green and yellow striped wire and a brown wire. The green n yellow and brown cable are just hanging doing nowt.
What do I wire into what, sfter I've flipped the upstairs lighting mains fuse of course;)
I will be eternally greatful to anyone that can advise me, scared to blow myself up:eek: but like the landing light on so its not dicky dark.
I hope this has made sense to some-one.
Much obliged:o

TBH, the phrase "if you can't work out how to do it then you shouldn't be doing it" comes to mind.
Anyway, Green/Yellow is earth, Brown is live and Blue is neutral (return path as it were, though it's AC).
With lights then there's generaly a live feed (Brown) and a return (Blue), and the live goes off to the switch (Brown) and comes back as another colour (Blue sometimes) and then goes to the live on the light fitting.
Your description doesn't make 100% sense to me. You have some connector blocks connecting various wires. With stairs it can be more complicated because having two switches adds more complication.Happy chappy0 -
Thanks Uncle Buck, that link was just the job!!! I know Tom, I shouldn't really attempt it, but cant afford to get a man that can, and my man certainlt can't. My padre was suppose to be doing it, but don't think me mother will let him.
Thanks you two for your advice, much, much appreciated!!RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

Sounds like it is the main junction for the upstairs ring.
If there is room under the new fitting then leave it be and just connect up the live and neutral.
However, as has been said above, if you're not sure, get someone in to do it- its only a 10 minute job.

Could you tell me how much I'd be expected to pay for this? Would I need a proper electrician, or would a handy man do?
Thankyou so much, am very very grateful.RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

check to see if the pendant base cover fits to your original pendant base.
if it does just disconnect the brown & blue from the old pendant lamp holder, connect in the new pendant where the brown & blue was disconnected with the new cover on. This will give you a new pendant but with leaving ON the old base.0
