Why don't you buy a collection of seeds off of ebay or something; and some modules from wilkos and keep the costs down. Modules can be reused loads of times so you can sow, plant out, resow; all spring and early summer long :D

Thanks. My problem is that I am very limited with space for growing from seed (although happy to do things like salad leaves straight into the beds). Plus, as I said, I had really bad results last year - I may possibly have been too keen and sowed too early though with some stuff.

I thought you had 5 metre beds? Which means you can sow into modules, and pop clear lids on them, and place them on the beds in question.

Just sow when it says, on the packets, that they can be sown under glass.
  • i also use the square foot method
and i love it, so much so we built 3 beds, 4x4ft, i plant one, then 2 weeks later plant the other, then 2 weeks later the 3rd, we got so much veg, it was incredible, after they were gone i planted one with onions, one with garlic and one with beetroot

i made a tumble pot, 6 pots high for herbs, so you only need floor space for one pot, i tried planting lettuce in guttering attached to the fence, but the birds thought it was a buffet! i only have a small garden but grow enough to feed 2 adults and 3 adult sized teens
hanging baskets are good for strawberries & tumbling toms
  • Midnight? Did you find square foot garden gave you good results then? I wondered if the plants were too densely planted. Did you follow the soil mixture to the letter?

  • i didnt follow the soil mix no
it was the first time in new beds and i just had normal compost in them
i was a bit dubious at first to be honest, and the only time i kinda ran into any problems, were when cabbage and cauli were getting to full size
it prevented me from using the bed in that area for a 2nd planting
my fault really i should have anticipated

    i have three beds
    plants one after the other
and get 2 plantings from end april till late sept

i did peas all along the backs as its against the fence
and had a variety of carrots onions parsnips etc etc
i did follow the planting number recommendations to the letter though
i found it a very easy, very low maintainance method, with a great yield

We grew some carrots in a patio bag/planter. We mixed some compost with a little chicken manure and blood fish and bone (left it for a couple of days before planting the seeds). We got some lovely large carrots.

Think these are ideal for a small space. Our garden is fairly small and it was ideal for us :)

If you have another go with your square foot method - grow some onions next to your carrots to distract the pesky carrot fly! :) we did that on our allotment and worked a treat!
All hail to the sale!!!!!!

Check your soil ph, if its off the soil cannot release nutrients.
