I'm currently off work, sick, after an operation. I have been informed i am to be made redundant (I work with the Housing Association part time). I have worked there for approx 7 years.

Now i have a feeling that they will offer me a job at an office 30 miles away as a way to get out of making me redundant and negating any payment due.

    Can they do this?

(i think this is the jist of the post! Damn, lazy text speakers/writers!!)

Are you not able to take the job 30 miles away if offered? A job is a job after all!

If your employer is making you redundant, where possible they should try to offer you 'suitable alternative employment' within their organisation or an associated company.
Whether a job is 'suitable alternative employment' depends on several things including:
    • how close the work is to your current job
    • the terms of the job being offered
    • your skills, abilities and circumstances in relation to the job
    • the pay (including benefits), status, hours and location of the job
So a job 30 miles away (assuming thats an extra distance) is not going to be suitable

it all depends on what the job is and how much it pays before you can say its not suitable...also how long it takes to get there
    Always ask ACAS

If they offer you a job 30 miles away, then it is common practice to pay milage to offset the extra expense to you. Or you could say that you would accept the job for a rise of £1.00 per hour to cover your extra travel expenses. That would put the ball firmly in thier court.

One possible problem with saying you would accept the job for an extra £1 per hour to cover travel costs - they could soon find some excuse or other to "claw back" that £1 per hour - perhaps a wage freeze or even an instant paycut?

That still wouldnt deal with the extra time spent travelling to work - and for a part-timer then that is even more of a consideration than for a full-timer. Yes - part-timers have more time available to travel to and from work BUT they spend proportionately more time on "travel to work time" anyway than a full-timer does.
