HI
Our builder has informed us that the floorboards that are going down in the kitchen and bedroom extension will be made of chipboard and not normal wood is this normal now a days?

Thank you Niall

Its common as its cheap, but its horrible stuff. Tends to be creaky and if you want to lift it later its difficult without destroying it. Worth paying extra for proper floorboards if you can.

    Hi Niall

Its fine if its glued and screwed down but as Keith says, its a nightmare if you need to get it up at a later date.

Floor boards would be more expensive but it depends what was specified in your quote as to whether it will cost you more or not.

There is a product known as water resistant chipboard. Investigate using that.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

The 'green' chipboard is water resistant and is worth paying that little bit extra. Its also much quicker to lay the large sheets of chipboard so therefore saves on labour costs as opposed to the standard T & G flooring.
