How Low Can You Go? (cheapest home phone line rental)

I make hardly any calls from my home phone as I always use my mobile free minutes. The only exception is 0800 numbers which are obviously free anyway and 0870/0845 numbers although 99.9% of the time I find the local equivalent and then use my mobile again. I therefore make about 1 call every 2 months that actually costs me money and even then it is about 20p.

My home phone is really only for incoming calls so when seeking my home phone provider, call costs are irrelevant and it is purely the line rental cost.

After a mistake made by my current provider when moving home they offered me a lifetime line rental reduction to £6.50p/m and true to their word this is still going on today 18 months on. This is not something they advertise - just a special rate for me.

Just wondering if anyone can beat this as I think this rate rocks! :D

    Hi Stevesmiff,

That's a great deal. Who is your provider?

And how do their call charges to 0844 / 0845 / 0870 / 0871 compare to BT's (let's assume that there isn't any direct dial numbers found in saynoto0870 etc)?

    Thanks,
    Senny

The deal was agreed with Toucan who seem to have now been taken over by Pipex. I don't know what BT charges but just had a quick look at the Pipex website which suggests 0845 is 1p (off peak) and 3p (peak) and 0870 is 5.9p (off peak) and 9.4p (peak) - peak being 6am until 6pm. I might be paying something different though due to my "special" deal? I've never had to pay more than 20p in total for calls on a bill even when I've had to make the odd 0870/0845 call (but as I say, this is very rare)

If you are being charged £6.50/month then they are losing money on you as they pay more than that to rent the line from BT/Openreach, I doubt any other service provider will beat a deal like this, after all its the economics of the madhouse
  • Pipex are part of Tiscali now part of Talk Talk. When TT integrate all the customers their probaly increase your line rental.

Didn't realise they are all same people. I've got a tiscali email and recently saw that I am now being redirected to the talk talk site. Any ideas when the takeover will reach pipex telephone?

The agreement was with Toucan and Pipex honoured it so with any luck Talk Talk will do the same? Either way I'll enjoy it while it lasts!
