Hubby's car written off (prob)

Hi, hubby left for work this morning, got hit by someone who managed to push him into a wall! Anyway, airbag deployed, front of car badly mangled, and he reckons it will be written off, its a 51 plate Alpha so not worth much, certainly not worth whats left on the hp, thankfully he took out GAP insurnace when he bought it...
Anyways, that leaves us with my car, he works in leeds, and my sons school isn't withiin walking distance, (not for me anyway cos i have breathing problems and am disabled),so lord knows what we're gonna do now, i am seriously scared.
Don't know if his policy includes a courtesy car but i dont think it does, anyway, anyone know what will happen now? He's still waiting for the car to be taken ona flat bed truck to a garage, its been 3 hours in the cold for him now, so worried about him.
Any ideas on how/where to get a very very cheap car deal, or hire one? His boss lives near us and he does sometimes go with him, but he's in hospital at the mo

Any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi there! Sorry to hear about your husband's car. We had something similar happen last week, so I know how you feel! The main thing to tell yourself is that he is OK, and anything else will eventually get sorted.

If he does end up having to use your car for a while, is there anyone (family, friend, acquaintance?) who could take your son to/from school for you in the short term? I find that lots of people are happy to help in a crisis, and you could offer to pay petrol if they are driving.

Good luck! and try not to worry.

  • I think if the other driver is at fault then their insurance will cover the cost of a hire car while your car is repaired/replaced. The best thing to do it to call your insurance company and let them handle it - they'll also advise on what can be done about getting a hire car.

The big assumption here will that the other party is at fault.

If I were you I would be looking to hire a car to cover him for this week. Try phoning round the hire companies (not the airports) and getting a quote for a small car. Don't go daft or they might not pay it.

That will give the insurance company time to get the ball rolling and just present them with the bill later.

Your problem is the wheels move slowly at the start.

    Doesn't really matter?

Presumably your hubby wasn't at fault, so the other party's insurer will have to cover the cost of a courtesy car...
  • Thanks all, found out he will get a courtesy car within 24 hours (phew) and they have already apponited a solicitor for his personal injury claim! Thats was quick?!!
Anyway, he's still waiting to have car recovered, and is in pain now, but im just glad he's ok.
If/when car gets written off, i assume courtesy car gets taken back, yes?
  • Bear in mind if the insurance claim doesn't go your way, you may be charged for that courtesy car.

Sounds like the claims already been referred to the helphire scumbags. best just hope no blame lies with him...
  • Thanks I think,....
I can't see how any blame can lie with him, he was crawling along and someone came round the bend and skidded into him, forcing him into the wall.
Anyway, he's off to hospital now to get checked out.

If the car does indeed turn out to be a write off you will have to give up the courtesy car. They're only provided while a car is being repaired...

Yes OP beware of the credit hire dilemma where they promise like for like courtesy cars, rather than a repairers Corsa or small car, you could end up out of pocket.
