On the move with fish

I have a patio pond (18" h X 40" w) which houses three goldfish which we've had for 3/4 yrs. It is expected that we will be moving house within a month. My aim is to save/preserve some of the water which will have living organisims in it to pour into fresh water when we arrive. Plants will have been housed separately.
But what about the fish?. Lord knows how we're going to to round this one. On moving day the van will take everything and it will remain in the garage for 2/3 days. We don't drive, so will be leaving here by train and breaking the journey half way to stay overnight with family, then travel to our new home and await the deliver lorry.
The only thing I can think of is to give the fish away and start again, what about you, any idea's?

I don't think your fish would survive the move, it would be better for them if you could give them to somebody who can home them straight away.
It will be stressful for the fish having to travel even a short distance.
Would the people who are having your house not want them as the pond is already in situ?0 -
Actually we too were coming down on the side of stress and not just for the fish. As for leaving the pond, that's a no-no because we bought it from a garden centre with wedding anniversary money so it means something to us. It is a nice timber clad rubber/plastic item. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

We moved tropical fish over 100 miles and didn't lose one. True, they were only in their temporary tank for a day, and we had a new tank already set up at the other end, but it was warm weather and therefore easy to do.
We asked the professionals how fish were transported from their suppliers to the shops, and when they explained, begged a polystyrene tank with a close fitting lid from them, as they have loads. We also bought a tranquilising chemical to add to the water, so the fish were in total darkness and very mellow! I'm sure it was just like a acid-house party for them!:rotfl:
Goldfish are pretty resilient members of the carp family and should be a doddle to transport, even if it means them being in the dark for a few days. After all, at this time of year they are torpid for many days at a stretch. However, they are also cheap to replace, so if it's a lot of hassle and you're not attached, you could just re-home them.0 -
gldfish are as tough as old boots but they do need oxygen and the temperature of the water can't drop too suddenly, when i worked in an aquatics shop (for several years) we used to move large fish by putting them in large bags and then putting those bags in poly boxes to keep them warm, they could happily stay like this for 24hrs.0
