We'll have to agree to disagree - all the system your describing does is encourage people who couldn't be bothered to do the work at school and go on to have children and live off the state for 8 years - then you can go to university without having to sit A-levels etc -what does that tell young people. I went to school stuck in got good gcses and alevels and went to university at 18 in 1995. I will never agree that anyone who hasn't gone through A-levels should go to university.
My friend went to university in around 2002 and NO she doesn't have any loans - EVERYTHING was paid for - why would I make it up. She was on income support and a 'lone' parent as her partner didn't live with her so as to maximise benefits!
The whole system is wrong in my opinion.

I've got to say Claire that I'm surprised your friend was able to get onto a degree course without the relevant qualifications needed. I have a friend who is training to be a midwife and she is currently on an access course to get the qualification required for that. Not that I'm disputing you of course.

I went to University with no 'A' levels in 1984 as a mature student of 34.

Up until I had my son in 1980 I had always worked full-time.

I did not claim any Benefits other than the Student grant, which every student had.

I went to a Girls' Grammar School but just didn't do any work while I was there, which is why I had no 'A' levels.

What is wrong with seeing the error of mistakes made when you were too young to know any better and trying to do something about it?

I was not (and never been) a single parent.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

She did actually do an access course so technically did have a relevant qualification - it just gets my goat that because I went the traditional route of alevels straight to uni and then had a child at uni that I had to fully support (my partner had a low income) yet she went the kids, council house, sponged off benefits route and got everything paid for and at the end of it all we both have degrees just I have all the debt to pay off!- i just don't think that sends the right message to young people!

It seems to be the way these days, do nothing and get everything given to you on a platter...don't worry, there's many of us out there sick to the teeth of it!
