Halifax Overdraft Charge - No notification

Hello,

I am really sorry if this has been mentioned before but I didn't find anything.

I have a Halifax account that doesn't really do a lot but I pay a small amount in each month and it generally sits around £100 overdrawn (or less).

Now, I know that the charges were coming in because my husband received a letter notifying him of the changes to the overdraft charging. I never received a letter and so assumed that it was only certain accounts that were affected.

I have just checked my online banking and found that they are planning to charge me £21 at the end of the month

My questions is where do I stand due to the fact that I have never been notified of a change to the Ts&Cs of my account? Had I known that my account was subject to the charges I would have made sure that I wasn't overdrawn in this account.

I suppose I could close my account but I have a joint account with them that pays all of our bills so I guess that they would just take the £21 from that account instead....?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you

Tina

    Err ok!

I would be fairly sure that they dispatched the change to T&Cs to you. For whatever reason you haven't read/received them specifically for your account.

I would suggest that you contact Halifax and explain this to them and politely ask for reimbursement. I would expect them to agree to the first lot, but nothing going forwards.

    Hope this helps.
  • I'll give that a go, thanks.

STOP THE ACCOUNT BEING OVERDRAWN IMMEDIATELY. ( cos the fees will be mounting day by day if you run it overdrawn)

WHY because from the 5th December they changed the charges on all current accounts, in anticipation they were going to have to repay "unfair charges on un-authorised overdrafts" under an FSA ruling. ( it turned out the banks won, so this was jumping the gun.

They decided that they would introduce "fairer charging", on ALL current accounts. ( I think they announced it in August?)

ONE POUND A DAY, for being overdrawn, even if it was authorised or not, so instead of a few pennies in interest for an accidental, but authorised overdraw you get walloped. ( eg I accidentally went overdrawn over a weekend in November (4 days) and it cost me 20p in interest, however if the same thing happened in December it would have cost me £4.
Those who regularly have unauthorised overdrafts are laughin as they can get £2500 for a pound a day.

They also stopped paying interest, but as a sop they introduced a £5 a month " Reward" Account if you pay in £1000 a month which is roughly equal to having to earn £13500 a year before tax. No good for pensioners as State pension is just over £5000 pa

It's £5 per day for an unauthorised overdraft.

That's not a relevant equation. The £1k only has to be credited .... it neither has to stay in the account nor does it have to be paid in from externally. You can pass the same £100 through the account x 10 if you wish. My wife has the Reward account for housekeeping. I put £1k in it ..... then immediately withdraw some of it before she can get to it!

Not to sound rude but how did you not know these charges were coming into effect? It's been everywhere in the media, on this website and on the moneysaving email.

Also have you checked your Halifax address? Is it right? I didn't receive the new T&Cs as my address took ages to change, but I still knew about the charges.

As you said your partner had a letter for the exact same type of account, so being unaware is so no excuse.

I would suggest getting back in the black and upgrade the account to the Reward account (don't let them sell you the ultimate reward account), then get a fiver a month by paying in total £1000 a month.
