Just something I think may be of use to some people who are due to renew breakdown cover with the AA to get a better deal based on my experiance today...

Last year I switched my breakdown cover to the AA following an advert through MSE with a good discount offer plus cash back. I can't remember the exact detials but cash back was approx £19.
My renewal is due this month but for the basic cover (which I currently have) they want me to pay £49 which is quite a lot after Christmas.

I called to advise I would not be renewing and of course they asked the reason why. I explained that at the moment I could not afford £49 (although at a push I could) but would probably look at it again later this year. The guy I spoke to looked at my account and said that as I had not had to use my cover in the last 12 months and to keep me as their customer they would offer me the next year at £28. A reduction of £21 seemed good to me so I have renewed!

After agreeing to renew I checked their website (which I guess I should have done first) and this is the same rate they are offering new customers.

Sounds like a good deal to me and hope someone else can make use from it.

I don't get it, I use quidco so can't comment on TCB.

With Quidco, you get £21 back, the policy is then £28 on the AA website, so you get the same "bargain" for £7.

hmm, I believe that is for new customers only (?) where as I was renewing - I see what you're saying though.

Either way I'm happy I didn't have to fork out £49 to renew.

It depends on whether you are prepared to let your cover lapse and then sign up again as a new customer. That will work IF the AA regards you as a new customer. I'm sure there must have been plenty of people who have tried and can let us know if it worked. I'm due for a renewal next month and will switch to the RAC if they have a decent cashback deal unless of course it is cheaper for me to rejoin the AA.

i found this thread because i am concerned for same reason as thor. I think I will use RAC this year, just to be sure. Only £1 more.

actually, just found a post by Martin advertising a quidco AA deal from last year and he says:

Who is it open to? New customers and those that cancelled more than 6 weeks ago.

If you've got an AA policy and are coming to renewal, you won't be eligible for this deal, but it's great for your haggling arsenal. Many who've told the AA they're unhappy with the renewal price and are considering trying elsewhere, have been given heavy discounts... throw this deal in the conversation and it should help.

I'll def be joining RAC this year, back to AA in 2011!
