joint power of attorney

Options
my wife and I are both in good health...at the moment.
we thought it might be a good idea to have power of attorney for each other,
in case of unforeseen illness or disability in the future..

Is there a cheap and simple way of doing the paperwork ourself or does it have to be done by a solicitor

Doesn't have to be done by a solicitor, but does need a clear head, concentration and time! There are two parts to it: one covers finance and the other 'lifestyle' - you can do either or both, with different attorneys if you so choose.

Do you have anyone else who could be a joint attorney? I ask because when the first of you dies, the other might want to have someone else helping out without any fuss, even if just for a bit. If you have two attorneys, you can do that.

I say this because my mum and dad were each attorneys for the other, with my brother in both cases. Now Dad's died, my brother has all the responsibility which he's not sure he wants to take on by himself. ATM Mum's fine, but she doesn't really want to think about changing the PofA, so my brother could end up 'stuck' with the job.

BTW, forms downloadable from the Public Guardian's website.
