And they WILL support you "short term" – for six months you can claim contributions-based JSA! Sorry, not helpful, I know!Yes you are right.
I have been paying in to "the state" for nearly 20 years, at a high rate....I was "naively" expecting "the state" could support me "short term" while i look for the next job.
On a more helpful note, I wonder whether you can afford to make some overpayments on your mortgage now so that if and when the axe falls, you will be able to take a payment holiday or at least have lower monthly payments...

We've sold our "lovely" house and move out next month, will rent for 6mths while we look for the "downsized" property, then maybe a year or two later....I will lose the job......just trying to reposition for this now and make the most of my assets/future (as a cancer survivor and father of 3)0
