Crossed Postal Order

sold an item on saturday for £18 inc p+p, my listing stated paypal, postal order or bankers draft. So this morning i get a postal order through for the full amount to take it to the post office to be told its been crossed. I specifically asked for it not to be crossed being as i dont intend on going into town until after i had the baby (only 4 weeks left and they dont think im going to last til the end of next week so im a bit dubious about going out especially on my own :o )when i pay it into the bank will it clear straight away or do i need to wait for it to clear?

Who do you bank with? Some post office affiliated banks allow you to pay crossed postal orders straight into your account at the PO using your bank card.

What about posting it to your branch - do you have deposit slips? Or don't nationwide function in that way?

i dont know if they function that way but i have never been given any deposit slips from them.

im just wondering does it need to clear and can it be cancelled etc? as if not then i will probably hold onto it until after i have had the baby and post it out regardless, but i dont want to post it if it can be stopped if you see what i mean

You can use a crossed postal order to pay a bill at the post office. If I can't get into town I pay them off my water rates.

It shouldn't need to clear. Postal orders are paid for up front.

One woman at the post office told me that. But then when I tried, a different woman said it was only if the crossed postal order was made out to the post office.

Anyway, I once had a crossed postal order sent to the wrong name!

Here's an extremely helpful thread on crossed postal orders. They can be paid in at the post office, (to certain banks) and you don't need a paying in slip, just your bank card. I've done it.
