moving a cherished plate bewteen cars...

Mum is about to buy a new car and wants to keep her current plate. It was bought for my Dad before he died.

Is it a case of transferring it to paper, gettin new plates etc for the old car, then giving the "paper plate" to the new car dealer (it is new, not pre-registered) ?

Any advice to minimise both the cost and the mither would be appreciated.

If you have already bought the new car and still have the old one its pretty straight forward if you have the V5 or the new keeper section. Take both V5s, mot's and tax discs to DVLA along with your insurance and they will transfer it for you for £80. They will have to send everything away and it will take up to a week before the plate is transfered so you cant put the private plate on the new car straight away.
If its a dealer they can also do this for you but will need all the required documents I mentioned above and again for same price etc!
What name is the private reg registered too? As I had a problem before as my reg was on retention under my name and my boyfriend bought me a car and registered it in his name and I wasnt allowed to put it on as it was 2 seperate names. So I had to change keeper on the V5 then wait on that coming through before putting the plate on. Or other option is to put it on retention and put the new keepers name on the retention certificate along with the origional name. You will then need to wait on the new retention certificate to come through the post before putting on new car. This method costs £105, which is made up of the £80 transfer fee and £25 to put it onto a retention certificate

As suggested, you could well have problems transferring the plate as it is not recorded in your Mothers name, I would advise you to speak with the Cherished Transfer Section at DVLA and seek their help.
