Was made redundent 3 months ago and havent claim, want to claim now

Options
Hi all

i have been working since the age of 15, now 30 and was made redundent at end of september 2009 and received a redundency payment. I have been supporting myself since then without benefits and now my saving have dwindled to approx £11k. Now i know that more than most but i still live with my parent at 30 and thats nothing living in London if u wanna buy i house!

Now my question is i want to claim JSA (u have never claim before) but i am scared that technology is so advance now that they will be able to detect that i have these savings. It is just in a regular online savings account.

Is there a was the DSS can detect you savings if you dont tell them?
Its been 3 months now since i was last working can i just say that my contract ended to avoid the question of redundency payments which i know that will want to know about?

I have paid into this system for 15 years now and i will just like a bit of income to cover everyday expenses like.

anyhelp wud be appreciated guys before i make the phonecall to book an appointment

You can claim cont based JSA with any amount of savings.
The DWP do, do audits of accounts and if they think anything looks dodgy can ask for access to bank accounts. they also can and quite often do ask employers under what circumstances you left. They would also likely ask to see your last wage slips as well.

You can have 16k of savings before losing all the income based JSA.

To be honest easiest thing to do is just claim cont based (based on the last 2 years contributions not on income or savings). The claim is quicker to process and you need less evidence. As you are not in a partnership or need to claim mortg or housing costs it will be the easist way. You get the same about £60 per week for a single person for around 6 months.

You should really have started your claim the day you left work. Moving on you must claim. At the very least you will get JSA (contribution based), your NI paid, free prescriptions and access to other schemes that are available to job seekers. When you make the phone call have all the information to hand. The jobcentre+ website should tell you all that you need to have.
Good luck with finding a new job soon.

Please own up to what you have in the bank. It's only fair on those that do. If they find out you will be guilty of fraud. Up to you if you want to run the risk.

Op - if you claim contribution based JSA now, they will assess the claim based on what class 1 (PAYE ) national insurance you paid in tax years 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, and you need to have paid enough NIC in both years - not just one of them. If you were employed full time and paying national insurance during this time, you will meet the qualifying conditions, and the amount of savings you have would not affect this - it is a Contributary benefit: you have paid in and are entitled to claim.

Please note that if you are awarded contribution based JSA, you are not automatically entitled to free prescriptions or free dental care - that only applies to income based JSA which is for people who have not paid enough national insurance in the relevant period, and are awarded JSA according to their means, or lack of. It is a non-contributary benefit.

If you don't qualify for contribution based JSA you can apply for income based JSA, but apply for the former first.
  • I may loose my job in a couple of months, I worked full time, but my employer could only afford part time wages, (note my contract never changed).

I have paid off my mortage, and have personnel saving of £10K, plus me and my husband have part owner ship of some business property that we have sold for 90K, this is in our business account, and is profit under the business.

I have paid into the state for 16 Years, am I entittled to claim JSA whilst looking for work.

For info, I am classed as a director but do not earn any wages from the company.

    Regards
