Cost for builder to lift floorboards for struc engineer

Hello,

What do you think an approximate cost would be for a builder to lift a few floorboards to give access to strucutural engineer who will be inspecting the joists (to work out the safety of two possibly load bearing walls which have been removed on the ground floor below).

The floors are carpeted, and would need to be made good when the floorboard go back down and I would think the struc engineer will want to look under the floor in a few differend areas.

I've got the cost of what the struc engineer will charge, how much do you think a builder would charge for something like this? I cant see it taking more than half a day?

Cheers

Part of the Furniture 500 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
Screwdriver or Crowbar then a hammer and some nails or screws, this is a money saving site lol :)

I'd hope a structural engineer could be specific enough to pick the areas they need to see, limiting it to a few boards!
  • my general purpose builder who can pretty much do everything works for £100 a day, half a day may not be too attractive to a builder as they may find it hard to make up the other half of the day elsewhere

if it's mainly hanging around and a bit of light work (lifting a few floorboards and putting them back and relaying the carpet) then maybe £60 and a few cups of tea

I see you're in London so add a bit to that.

like other people have said it is a v. easy job, are there any bits you feel you can't do yourself? or would you rather not/ can't?

    Thanks for the replys.

I would like to do it myself, but unfortunately its not my house yet!

Sorry I should have explained that Im in the process of buying this house, and I doubt the vendor would let me be the one who pulls the place apart!

so a carpet fitter will be necessary as well to 'make good'....... maybe a fitter would do the lot for a few quid ;)
  • yeah maybe a carpet fitter might be your best man as surely they will be experienced with moving a few floorboards around, they normally have a couple advertise in the back of local papers

I really do not see why the vendor would have a problem with this being done Surely the sale is conditional on it being done? Why would the vendor have a problem with you lifting a few floorboards and not have a problem with someone you've paid lifting a few floorboards. One might also ask the question - is the structural engineer incapable or is, perhaps, lifting a few boards beneath (:D) him?

I completely agree with you. Its just that some people have funny ideas about things having to be done "Professionally", and we havent gone through with the sale yet, so nothing is certain. We haven't actually asked the Vendor yet as we are still waiting on their Solicitor to come back with info on if they have building regs or not. I just wanted to be armed with the info when the time comes!

Oh and its clearly beneath the Struc engineer to lift fllorboards - he told me himself he would need a builder to do it!

    Cheers
