It really depends what you are looking for !

£1500 will get you a one week cruise with one line and 3 weeks with another.

Do you want something "quiet" and luxurious or disco/casino and rock climbing wall ?

I am definitely in the first category and have been with Cunard and Saga. At first glance Cunard appear to be cheaper, but when you read the small print you will see there are many things that WILL cost you extra on their ships.
Saga do cater for the "more mature" passenger, but I thought the average age on Cunard was higher than on Saga !!

A chat with a good travel agent might help.

and............ spend lots of time reading here:-

  • Great thanks Moonrakerz.

I think like you we probably belong to the first section I'm not sure that our OAP's are up for the disco although probably they would enjoy the rock climing wall :-)

I've been looking at P&O Europe, I did rule out Cunard just because I thought that it would be too expensive?

Haven't been with P & O, but I would say they are "middle of the road".

P&O are a truly British cruise company and are one of the few who use sterling on board. In terms of ratings they are up there with the best with ships scoring 1400+ from 2,000 in the Berlitz cruise guide.

During summer all their ships sail from Southampton which means no flying (no luggage limit!) but going to the Med needs two weeks and on one of the legs you will probably do a very long sea trip - at least 2 full days at sea.

£1500 will just about get you two weeks on a P&O ship in an inside cabin.
  • We did a Fred Olsen cruise from Dover which was lovely. All depends on what kind of cruise you are after. We loved the Fjords and would recommend that.
  • What about celebrity? They seem to be quite reasonable and also from Southampton?

I don't think we are too fussy about the destination as the oap's havent had much experience of travelling.

another vote for Fred Olsen, lovely small and very friendly ships...no climbing walls and no crowds of kids (but thats what we prefer!)

We have sailed with my parents a few times.
    40-50s + OAP

Celebrity worked well for us as a family

They also loved the two Thomson Topaz AI trips we did, they don't do drink but great overall experience they did a Emerald trip on there own(we could not go) late 208 and loved it.

NCL in suites were the best and we did that on a deal to Norway at around £1500pp + expences in June 2008.

We have done Fred Olsen a few times and liked those as well.

What sort of trip would you want and what trade offs one good one cheap cabin is an option, good ship cheap cabin, cheaper ship better cabin, off season etc.

By the way that was just an exampl - our regular cruise is the 3 or 4 night Bahamas from Port Canaveral - Just booked our next one $ 179.00 for 2 of us - that's about £110.00 for 3 nighter!
