test drive and insurance

Motortrade Insurance is surprisingly cheap for well run businesses with a good record.

However the Insurers do apply certain restrictions to driving and the cars they are driving. It is not a blanket policy for absolutely anyone to drive absolutely anything

Can you give us some of the restrictions?

I have only just passed my test, have a full license, but I want to test drive a car which is in group 12.

A motor trade policy is not for you if your not a motor trader, apart from being expensive if your a new driver it would not be valid if your not a motor trader.
  • I dont want to take out a policy... i want to go to a main dealer and have a test drive.... but i haven't had a license that long.

Just take your licence along to the dealer along with the papercounter foil, some might ask to see a utility bill.

They will either do an accompanied test drive (The salesman sits with you) or sometimes you are allowed on an unaccompanied test drive.

Please remember you don't have to buy the car their and then, car salesmen are very good at selling cars. Take time to think about it and have a look around so you find the car that is best for you.

Don't buy GAP insurance from the dealer as it will be at least twice the going rate

And if you're young and want to test drive something ridiculous i.e. a porche or something, being insured by the dealer is one thing but convincing him you're serious is quite another I imagine! I've often been tempted to do this but never have. :D

Suprisngly insurance groups dont mean that much - I'm 18, male, with a years NCB and pass plus having passed my test December last year, and my insurance for this year on my group 11 Proton was £1152 (expensive, yes, but not astronomical as Group 11 suggests!).

I could swap to a Merc C-Class C220 CDI (93-00 w202 model) for £0 (not even an admin fee) and thats group 12...
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Agreed. Always get actual quotes not just look at groups. My group 7 hyundai 1.3 is less than some lower group corsas, and MUCH less than a mondeo 1.6 which is supposed to be in the same group.
