Problem - I feel embarrased asking for tap water in restruants

I feel 'dirty' and 'cheap'... my voice kinda lowers... 'Can I have erm.. tap water' please?

Everyone should ask for tap water. It's a total waste of money. Even if I was a gazillionaire, I would ask for tap water.

Bottled water is such a con. £1 a bottle in central London, are you having a larf?

Nothing wrong with that. Bottled water is a rip off. Truth is that some tap water tastes better anyhow, we have really hard water round here and I like it's bite. Soft water from other parts of the country almost makes me sick. Must be the lime in the hard water ;)

But no need to feel guilty, you're a student. Stoop as low as you can go. I'd be asking for a doggy bag at the end of the meal and pinching stuff off of other people's plates. Off of other people's tables if I could get away with it.

Asking for tap water isnt being trampy..... i know plenty of people who drive to a restaurant in a top of the line Jaguar and have no problem asking for tap water. Anyone considering you a tramp for requesting tap water is not worth your concern!

I'm proud of asking for tap water - it's free, it's natural and it saves on excess packaging. The only problem is when i ask for it abroad - i've been refused tap water and i really don't know if there are certain countries that are allowed to refuse customers' rights to tap water.

I always ask for a jug of tap water whenever I go out to eat. Even if I've got another drink as well. Nothing to be ashamed of. I ask for it in the pub as well when I don't fancy anything else! Husband can't not take me out when I harldy cost him anything - Oh and I ask for kids meals as well!!!

Nothing wrong with asking for tap water, in other Northern European countries it is totally the norm to be served tap water automatically with coffee or wine.

There is no way on earth I would ever drink bottled water...Read up on the processes that bottled water goes through in comparison to tap water...And reports on how long the water stays in the bottle in some cases between being processed and being sold.....2 years plus in most cases....What a lovely thought!

If it makes you feel better, just simply state can I have some water for my tablets...If they ask bottled, just state tap will do...Simple and nothing trampy about it, we are lucky to have tap water that is drinkable, so make the most of it!

There is nothing wrong with asking for tap water, I don't understand why people make such a big deal out of it. Asking for tap water does not make you look like a tramp. I've done plenty of waitressing/bar work and i've always thought the people who insist for bottled water are a bit of ***
As some of the previous posters have said, in other countries, you just get tap water without asking for it.

If you feel asking for tap water makes you look like a tramp then buy bottled water. Dare I say it but the issue here might not be about tap water, but more about wether your choices in life are driven by what you percieve other people think of you.

This is not a good way to think if you want to save money, fickle people can generally never be true money savers.

The first time we visited Florida, we spent an absolute fortune in the parks and restaurants on fizzy drinks, and most of it was wasted as we dont drink a lot of fizzy stuff at home, but the second time we realised that all the fizzy drinks dispensers have a water tap, and its free. Last year I worked out we saved around $200 and enjoyed the water a lot more as well.
