Illness and money worries

Hi all, I'm usually over on the student board but wondered if you could help me.
My friend is in the middle of doing a PhD funded through the Research Council. He's currently on indefinate leave due to depression and thus is no longer getting any money via the RC/university. His doctor has said it's likely to be at least 12months. With no money he's worried about meeting the bills, especially the rent. Is there anything he can claim while he gets sorted?
I'm lending him the money for this month's rent, and he's going to try to talk to someone at the job centre tomorrow but if anyone can give some advice that'd be wonderful.
thanks in advance
