A few years ago I was subjected to this when an upstairs neighbour installed laminate throughout the entire flat. They also had a flat footed 2 year old.

It was incredibly depressing and we simply moved.

At least you're thoughtful about trying to do something about it. Rugs are a good idea, they may help.
  • Bronnie - We will be moving as soon as we can afford it. For many reasons, including this one. We have been saving for a while now. Unfortunately it is unlikely to be before 2011 at the earliest, so not a good remedy for the immediate problem.

Ironically, I know that they would like to move too. And not just because of us! This building was very cheaply built in the 60s and is now just falling to bits, but they own their flat and can't afford to sell in the current market. So, we're stuck with each other for the time being!

2sheds - I just pulled the carpet up to have a good look - looks like plain old, crooked and bent floorboards to me. Is hardboard flooring something the landlord should do?

We had awful problems with the neighbours above us when we lived in a flat. The whole building was fitted with mostly parquet or tiled flooring. The thing is that their young child's noise wasn't so bad during the daytime, but they let him run riot all night. He'd run and jump for hours until about 3am every single morning, meaning we got very little sleep.

However, it sounds as though your little boy isn't doing that, and you've certainly tried to help matters. I agree with frannyann about having a friendly word with your neighbours to explain what measures you've taken and that the noise shouldn't be a problem after his bedtime. I think that sounds pretty reasonable.

I'd rather have had you with your little boy than my neighbours with their wild night owl son anyday!
  • Thanks Madget.

He is always in bed by 7.30 and doesn't get up during the night. It is purely daytime noise.
  • Might be a totally rediculous idea, but could the two of you swap flats?

You could also find out if the people below go to work and what times they are in and out. I would also suggest if they are in during the day you take your lad out to the park or play area and try to confine his running about to when they are out.

Its a difficult problem, my neighbour has a 7 year old and wooden floors. He drives me mad somedays, but it usually lasts only about an hour at a time.

Then don't feel guilty. You can't stop a toddler expressing themselves, especially during the day.

Daytime noise can't be helped. What about when your washer's on? Or the hoover?
Look at it this way... In a hundred years who's gonna care?
