i want to add a shortcut for ie to my toolbar, how do i do it, and how do i add other icons for example one that would let me get to the desktop quickly without having to minimize every internet page open

The Quick Launch Toolbar will do all that for you. To get it, right-click an empty part of the Taskbar (the area at the bottom between Start button and clock) and select Toolbars -> Quick Launch. That gives you a Show Desktop icon on the Taskbar which minimises all windows.

To add more icons, first create the icon on the Desktop, then unlock the Taskbar by right-clicking it and unticking 'Lock the Taskbar' and then drag and drop the icon from the Desktop onto the Taskbar. Lock it when finished.
