I had this problem with my brother-in-laws machine.
I got him to tap F6 when it was booting to disable the auto-restart option.
That then gave us access to a blue screen with an error code.

You could try that and then post any error codes you find.
it won't affect your data in any way.

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

managed to 'install' puppy Linux to my computer
I am not too familiar with puppy linux, but just to clarify - have you booted off the puppy CD, and not installed it on the hard drive you are trying to recover from.

That's good :) you had me worried there.

Now I assume what you are trying to do is recover your data from a corrupted Windows installation - you have booted from a linux CD - and you need to copy those files somewhere safe.
So, you need to run some sort of file manager within puppy (I will check, but you will probably have to mount the windows drive first), and then you need something to copy the files onto - do you have an external hard drive connected as well?

    Brave enough to try this?

Sorry, I'm a bit rushed as I'm off to Oz soon and have a lot to do.

If you aren't sure, ask at the forum.

Forget all the above.. You dont want to install Linux as your clearly a windows user and linux will just confuse you.

Take all cd's/DVD's out of your computer and turn it on.

keep pressing F8 you wil then get a black screen with a load of text. Use the arrow keys to highlight the option

"Disable Automatic restart on system failure" and press enter

Your computer should then reboot and will probably end up with a blue screen with a load of white writing. Copy down the error code and post it here. It will look something like

    Stop 0x0000000A or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Looks like a hard disk error;
Do you have a windows XP cd?
If so you need to boot into recovery mode and run CHKDSK /F

I have only got the recovery disc as it came already installed.
It won't let me repair only install, which will wipe my data.
