Hello,
I have just recentally set up an account with Alliance and Leicester after being with Halifax for many years. I am keeping one account open with Halifax and trying to get a standing order set up online from my Halifax to A&L account but it is not allowing me due to the A&L account have 9 numbers in the acc number.
Has anyone come across this and know how to fix it? Or will I need to go into branch?
Thank You,
Neil

Sort code and account numbers
If you need to quote your sort code and account number for paying money into your current account from an external source (including Direct Debits), please use the following details:- The sort code is 72-50-0x - with 'x' being the 1st digit of your 9 digit account number.
- The remaining 8 digits of your account number should then be used for the account number for the payment into your account.
If your account number is 987654321, the sort code will be 72-50-09. Your 8 digit account number to quote is 87654321.

Spot on...drop the first digit of the 9 digit number and you have the magic 8 digit account no.0 -

IIRC - The A&L 9 digit account number comes from the histroic Girobank which was purchased by them years ago.
I wonder whey they haven't standardised them with all other bank sort codes and account numbers ?0
