I contacted my home branch of Virgin Active in Wood Green and was shocked with the answer to my question. I have been a member since July 2009 and am still in my 12 month contract. However i have now sustained ligament rupture and my GP has signed me off for 3 months from work i explained this to them and lady said i can freeze the account for 3 months. I said i want to cancel as i wont be able to attend gym as i will need physiotherapy too and have been advised that it could take up to 6 months for full recovery but they refused to budge. Is there anything i can do or has anybody else escalated this to somebody else?

Sounds fair to me tbh.
Your physio will almost certainly involve regular gym work such as cycling and building up muscle in your leg.0 -
As far as Virgin Active are concerned, you signed a contract and will be expected to honour it. Your injury, whilst obviously causing you difficulties, does not change that fact. They are under no obligation to do anything other than what is stated in their T&CsHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I tore 3 ligaments in my knee ..... If i didn't go to the gym everyday sometimes twice I still wouldn't be able to walk now 7 months later.
I suggest whilst your off work, you should go to the gym everyday until your better, not only will it hopefully fix your injury, you will be fit and healthy and get your moneys worth of your contract!0 -
My gym membership,I think, does allow cancellation through illness, but then its council run.Buyer beware.0

I fear you wont get far in cancelling your membership. However I think you should discus with your physio exercises, that you can do in the gym to help strengthen your damaged ligament. If your gym has a pool I would bet your physio will suggest using it.
