I've just put on a pea and ham casserole:

    2 gammon steaks, cut up
3 small onions softened in 2 tbsp olive oil
    tin chopped tomatoes
    2 pints vegetable buillion
1 cup of red split lentils
    half cup of pearl barley
1 tin of value new potatoes
    handful of frozen mixed peppers

Smells lovely - hope it comes out ok!

  • I'm sorry if this has been asked before but this thread is huge to say the least!

Which is the best slow cooker recipe book to get? Am I better off going for the one with the most recipes or is there one that most users on here swear by?

That should have been enough. Just checking was the same amount of liquid still in it at end, or almost same amount? Its just in case lid not fitting properly.

Brisket usually cooks wonderfully in SC but with it being so dry at end does sound as if it did need more liquid. This is puzzling. Trying to think, I wonder if the beef was very old, as the older the more liquid it needs. I don't mean you knew it was old, but wonder if it had been frozen to long before you bought it, even if you bought it fresh, it could have been frozen sometime in past and this could cause it to be to dry and taste horrible. Had this happen once, I took it back to shop, cooked and dry and they did an investigation, turned out the brisket had been found buried in a freezer in store room well past dates, but defrosted it and it smelt and looked ok so they repackaged it and sold it as fresh. This was a well known SM and I ended up with quite a lot of coupons as an apology.

Just so sorry it happened, nothing worse than you are looking forward to something and you have to throw it away, or give it to the dog ( my lot get treats that way as well) I know some on the don't throw it away thread would say you should have cut it up, put it in a pan with gravy and onions and cooked it right through till it becomes moist, rather than waste, but I would rather do as you did, or as said that once took it back.

    .

I would say that it had more liquid at the end, from the beef juices. I dont think its the lid as i dindn't notice steam escaping.
To be honest I dont think the Sc is very good, I think it maybe cooks too fast?

I`m wondering if this is the case too but i also think that if brisket is not cooked long and slow enough then it goes stringy. I`ve also had a cut of beef that said it was brisket and it seemed to be quite different (no fat) so i think that i may have had one labelled up wrongly in the past.

Have you had the sc long? If not then i would maybe try for a refund or better still go for a different brand, i`ve seen a few comments recently about breville in various places. I have a Morphy Richards and a Tesco one, both different sizes and good for different things but overall i think that the Tesco cheapy is just as good if not better than the MR.
