Letters wanting you to apply for c/c

i have recieved a letter today from asda credit card wanting me to fill in a form to apply for their card. i know this means i am not pre approved or anything i was just wondering why companies do this i have quiet a few credit cards and have never recieved one for a company wanting me to apply its usually me always applying to them, i just want to know what there intentions are and if they just want to decline you, bearing in mind on the letter they called me Mr and i am a Miss,i just don't really know what to make of it or whether to apply or not?

Its merely a marketing excersie on their part. They have found your name (incorrectly listed) on a database somewhere and direct mailed you about their Credit Card. Its just sheer advertising.

If the card appeals to you, then apply. If not, just ditch the documentation and move on.

I don't believe they try and get you to apply just so they can decline you, that would be a waste of resource on their part.
