Acer wriggling out of warranty claim

Hi

First of all opologies if this post is in the wrong forum - admin please feel free to move it.

I would like some advise on the following situation please

I bought an Acer Aspire netbook in Feb 2009 for £220 and paid by creditcard. In approx July 2009 it developed a problem where by i was not able to access the "Network Center" Menu on the netbook and the keyboard became inoperative. I rang acer who arranged to take it in for repair.

However due to certain cirsumstances at home i was unable to send it back to them and it remained out of use untill in december i rang them again. Before ringing them i thought i would test it and found that the battery was not holding charge anymore and the netbook switches off unless its plugged in all the time.

I rang acer and they opened another case and requested i return the netbook to their warrenty department.

a week later i have recieved a quote totalling £260 to repair the netbook.

Acer claim various components have suffered water damagaed and that the unit was opened by unauthorised party i.e me!

This is all news to me - the unit definatley did no suffer any water damaged what so ever and neither was it opened or tampered with in any way.

To top it all off i have to pay £54 for it to be returned to me unrepaired.

I have had a look on the intenet and found that acer warrenty repair leaves a lot to be desired here in UK and US and i firmly believe this is just an easy way out and easy money for them.

I would therfore be grateful if somebody on here could point me in the right direction in how to pursue. As far as i am concerned i barely got 6 months use out of the netbook and thats just not acceptable. I would either like a refund repair or replacement.

Use the small claims court. Don't let them get away with this.

You mean the small claims procedure in the county court. There's no such thing as a small claims court.
Don't let them get away with this.
Agree - but it would be interesting to hear the other side of the story as well.

ask them to send PROOF of the water damange - i used to work in laptop repair and most people who claimed there was no water damage were TBH talking out of their !!!! to put it blatently... as soon as we sent the photos it was a different story!

however i have also been on the flip side - where some companies have claimed water damage, but when it came to the evidence, it was very minimal and they caved in.

Also, to note - a lot of PC/laptop builders do not use their own repair centeres, instead they licence out the repairs to a 3rd party company. I know Toshiba's repair center Teleplan were more than usless and I have had plenty of run ins with them at work... Dell also use a 3rd party company to deal with onsite and RTB repairs....

Bats will usualy only hold a 6 month warranty due to the nature of them - you could probably go down the distance selling route - however as bat's are classed as a consumable item you might as well replace it yourself
  • Im in a similiar proces with Acer repair centre at the moment. My laptop has a loose power socket and they are trying to say that some how Ive broken it even though its inside a sealed unit. The laptop is 10mths old and in pristine condition and only used by me. Ive been told to call them this friday and they will tell me if they will repair it or not. If they wont repair it free they want to charge me £70 or £54 to have it returned to me. What a rip off. How have you gotten on with yours ?

  • Did you buy it direct from Acer?

If yes, then chase them as your contract is with them (via small claims if needs be) - they are required by the sale of goods act to deal with the problem.

If no, then chase the company you bought it from, your contract is with them so they have to deal with your problems.

Best of luck. If any one is doing a class action against Acer's unreasonable and cavalier attitude count me in.
