  • you get what you pay for.

go local, get a friend or family recommendation.

when paperwork has hit an obstacle, being able to run round the town dropping off and picking papers up to move things along can keep your chain intact.

I've used fwdlaw who are based (I think) in Newport.

They're cheap. I found that they are not bad as regards speed but not great as regards accuracy... lots of typos, they didn't check the stuff I sent them till the last minute, etc. So a decent option IF you are prepared to double check everything yourself.
  • We've gone with the ones recommended by the vendors EA. Not the cheapest but always respond promptly to emails and phones calls. Apart from the commision, we guessed the EA has as much an interest in a good fast solicitor as you do!

From what I researched, choosing an online solicitor worked okay as long as you researched who you were dealing with and the sale was straightforward. The more of a chain is involved, or if one of the properties is leasehold, etc, then generally there was more of a recommendation to use a local solicitor.

I have just used the online company Conveyancing Warehouse (easily Google'd) to buy a house in London and would recommend them. They are based in Macclesfield, so everything has to be by post. I only had to send one thing by special delivery though, during the worst of the snow.
